When you are looking at the signs that indicate success at your nonprofit, these signs are called “key performance indicators” (KPIs). KPIs are what you will relate back to your community and donors, typically showing engagement, retention, value, and ultimately your overall mission and goals.

Measuring your impact is critical as it shows the actual difference your organization is making. As a leader and team, you decide:

  • What does success look like for your organization

  • What is the plan to get there

  • Collect data

  • Showcase findings

Your key performance indicators should be expressed in a single data point so it can be easily compared to past performances, future, and national averages. Your KPIs also help your whole team move collectively towards a common goal clearly and can be used a type of north star when making decisions.
